Kitchen Remodel Trends 2026 (and What Already Looks Dated)

Kitchen Remodel Trends 2026

The biggest 2026 shift is cabinet color. In Houzz's 2026 Kitchen Trends Study, wood cabinets (29%) now narrowly lead white (28%), and white has dropped 5 points. Two-tone kitchens and wood island tops are also rising. All-white, gray, and dark wood kitchens are the looks fading fastest.

What is growing

Wood cabinets

Wood leads at 29%: medium tones 15%, light 11%, dark 3%. Light and medium wood suit Bethesda's brick colonials and mid-century ramblers well.

Two-tone kitchens

Uppers are mostly white. Lowers lean wood (37%), blue (19%), or green (14%). It adds color without a full commitment.

Wood island tops

Houzz reports 39% of islands now have wood tops. If you are weighing an island, see our kitchen island page.

Layout trends

Open shelving, hidden appliance garages, and pantry walls keep gaining ground.

What looks dated

LookWhy it fadesWhat to do instead
All-white kitchenDown 5 points in one yearWhite uppers with wood or color lowers
Gray cabinets and floorsReads cold and flatWarm off-white (15%) or soft green (6%)
Dark wood everywhereShrinks small roomsMedium wood with lighter counters

Trend or timeless: how to choose

Put trends in what is cheap to change: paint, hardware, lighting, backsplash. Keep the bones neutral: layout, counters, and cabinet boxes.
