How to Survive a Kitchen Remodel (Temporary Kitchen Setup)

How to Survive a Kitchen Remodel

To get through a kitchen remodel, set up a temporary kitchen in another room, plan simple meals for the weeks without a stove, and seal the work area against dust. Our remodeling process page shows how long you will be without a kitchen.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

Eight items cover most households: a fridge, a microwave, an induction plate or air fryer, a kettle or coffee maker, a bin, a washing station, storage bins, and paper goods. A dining room or basement works well. Keep it away from the dust path.

Plan Meals for 6–12 Weeks

Plan for 6 to 12 weeks without a stove in a mid-range remodel, and 10 to 18 with a layout change.

  • Batch-cook and freeze meals before demolition.
  • Use a slow cooker or outdoor grill.
  • Set a takeout budget so it does not surprise you.

Keep Dust and Noise Under Control

Ask for zip walls, negative air or air scrubbers, and covered walkways. In homes built before 1978, lead-safe practices also apply under the EPA RRP rule. We are an EPA RRP certified firm. See our lead paint guide.

Surviving With Kids and Pets

Five tips help most:

  1. Keep daily routines steady.
  2. Mark a safe zone away from the work area.
  3. Ask for crew hours up front. Ours are Mon–Fri, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  4. Keep tools and materials secured.
  5. Move pets to a quiet room or a sitter during demolition.

Can You Live in Your House During a Kitchen Remodel?

Yes, most families do. Moving out makes sense for whole-floor work, lead hazards, or households with infants.
